Our first loans through the Adam Smith Benevolent Fund

Adam Smith
One of the projects of the Moorfield Storey Institute is to raise monies and distributes grants specifically to fund microlending projects in developing nations, encourage private education in poor countries, and contribute to worthy, non-governmental infrastructure projects. As libertarians we believe in charitable giving. We have now made our first four loans to worthy projects in the developing world. More information on each of those loans is below.

A percentage of all donations we receive will be used for these purposes. You may also earmark donations for the Adam Smith Benevolent Fund and we guarantee that 95% of such donations will be distributed.

We believe that libertarians must be charitable if they are to sell the virtues of voluntary charity to a skeptical public. We would like you to join us in this entirely libertarian charitable enterprise.  You may make a donation directly to the Storey Institute, may earmark funds for the Benevolent Fund, or join our charitable group at Kiva.

Micro financing loans are repaid and as they are we will make new loans, allowing the amount we have loaned to continually grow. If you donate through us we will continue to make new loans and keep donors informed about the loans we are making. You can simply make a donation to us and leave us to do the work. Or, if you are more hands-on, you can join our donation group at Kiva and pick the loans you wish to make. To join our group and make your own loans go here.  If you wish to donate through us, and leave us do the work for you, then call us at 480-685-2651 for online payment, or send a check to Moorfield Storey Institute, 20258 US Hwy 18, Apple Valley, CA 92307. As our funding base grows we will be tackling entire loans instead of portions of loans. Here are the first four projects we decided to help fund through a loan.

Vafa Huseynova • Azerbaijan
Vafa is 33 years old, single and lives with her family. She is internally displaced after being relocated from Agdam to Absheron. For five years she has run her own beauty salon, after having worked in her aunt's salon. Vafa wants to expand the size of her salon so she can hire another employee to handle the number of customers she has. This loan meets our criteria in that it fosters self-reliance, encourages business development, helps create a useful job, and is for a non-political, non-religious purpose.

Wilber Alexander • San Miquel, El Salvador
Wilber is 27 years old and lives with his wife and infant son. Eight years ago he went into the photography business. He now wishes to purchase a video camera to expand his business and better provide for his family. This loan meets our criteria.

Nidia Pereira • Lambare, Paraguay

Nidia is 40 years old, married and has three children. She and her husband have been fish merchants for 20 years. She began her work selling fish directly from the river, as her parents had done. She then expanded to a stall in the local market. And then started an eatery where she prepares various fish dishes for customers. Nidia is looking to expand the variety of fish that she sells.

Temuujin Myagmar • Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Temuujin is 30 years old and lives with his wife, their four-year-old daughter and his older sister in a two bedroom apartment. Two years ago he and his wife began a popcorn-making business and sell their products through various stores. With his business growing he is looking to purchase a car to make it easier to deliver his products and expand the market.

Adam Smith, the great free market liberal, said: "How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature which interest him in the fortune of others and render their happiness necessary to him though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it."

  1. Yes, we can. Sorry but I didn't see this message earlier. You can contact us via our email at askus@fr33minds.com, which is our online bookservice and the email we have set aside for public distribution (to limit spam in other emails). We will then contact you about how to do this.
